WHERE STONE LEARNS TO BREATHE
FORESQUE RESIDENCES
THE BRIEF
The clients lead dynamic, fast-paced professional lives and envisioned their home as a place of quiet retreat – one that offers respite from the rhythm of the city. Inspired by years of encounters with thoughtfully crafted residential and hospitality spaces during their travels, they embrace calmness over complexity, where every material and architectural gesture carried purpose. Entertaining is an important part of their everyday life, whether through intimate dinners or casual gatherings. Rather than viewing the home as a collection of separate rooms, they sought a fluid environment that encourages interaction while maintaining a sense of warmth and serenity. They were particularly drawn to natural stone for its authenticity, unique character, and ability to age gracefully, reflecting their belief that a home should evolve beautifully over time alongside its occupants.
THE SPACE
Where Stone Learns to Breathe is an exploration of permanence, light, and spatial openness where architecture becomes a quiet backdrop for everyday life, allowing materiality and human interaction to take centre stage.
Materiality forms the foundation of the design language. Natural marble was selected not as a decorative statement, but as an architectural element that lends individuality to the space; each slab carefully curated for its distinct veining and composition. Given marble's visual presence, a key challenge was balancing the expressive use of natural stone with restraint. Hence, careful consideration was given to the selection, scale, and placement of each slab to complement rather than dominate the space. Warm timber, tactile plaster and soft natural finishes were introduced to achieve a quiet richness allowing each element to breathe within a cohesive architectural language. Rather than competing for attention, these materials reveal their character through changing daylight, touch, and time.
