THE UNFINISHED VERSE
COMPASS HEIGHTS
THE BRIEF
Seeking to design a family home for four, the clients were inspired by the unfinished quality and treatment of materials within brutalist architecture. As avid collectors of BE@RBRICKs, they enjoyed the idea of a dedicated display space that was aligned with the brutalist influence, bringing a balance of industrial hints and avid personality into one space.
THE SPACE
The Unfinished Verse is a family dwelling that holds the rawness of man-made textures, enveloped by lush greenery outside. It is a world within the world, a canvas on which their story is still being written. While personality is rarely found within the stoic soul of brutalism, here it is essential — its quiet honesty allows the rawness of béton brut to finally belong to them.
The living room and dry pantry triangulated with a statement island that doubled as the “kitchen”; which sat under a pendant lamp and a hood for the induction hob. It challenges what the notion of a kitchen could be, stripping the concept of a “space” to the essentials, and arriving at a simple fixture onto a structural element in the home. Behind the sofa, a glass display cabinet was built into part of the structure: a see-through partition which extended the passageway into the bedroom, turning personality into the foundation the home is built upon, rather than an addition.
